Heater Core Replacement Procedures

Instrument Panel Removal


CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges and may be damaged If exposed to static charges.

NOTE :  The heater core and evaporator core are not serviced individually. The entire housing must be replaced if either component is defective.

 

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Recover the A/C refrigerant, if equipped.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Disable the air bag system.
  5. Remove the floor console.
  6. Remove the 2 door scuff plates.
  7. Remove the 2 lower A-pillar upper and lower trim panels.
  8. Remove the instrument cluster.
  9. Secure the steering wheel in the straight ahead position, then disconnect the steering shaft to steering column pinch bolt.
  10. Disconnect the left side instrument panel bulkhead connector and remove the instrument panel support bolt.
  11. Disconnect the antenna inline connector and the 4 instrument panel electrical connectors from the right side.
  12. Remove 2 instrument panel center support screws and 3 support bolts.
  13. Through the instrument panel cluster opening, remove the instrument panel cowl top bracket nut.
  14. Remove the 2 lower instrument panel support bolts.
  15. Remove the 2 instrument panel end panels.
  16. Remove the 4 instrument panel upper support bolts.
  17. Using the help of an assistant, remove the instrument panel.
  18. Clamp off and disconnect the 2 heater hoses at the heater core.
  19. Disconnect the 2 evaporator core nuts and disconnect the fitting.
  20. Remove the 2 heater core housing nuts at the dash panel.
  21. Disconnect the antenna cable from the housing.
  22. Remove the inside evaporator housing nuts.
  23. Remove the heater core/evaporator housing.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core/evaporator housing.
  2. Install the inside evaporator housing nuts and tighten to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  3. Connect the antenna cable from the housing.
  4. Install the 2 heater core housing nuts at the dash panel and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  5. Connect the 2 evaporator core nuts and connect the fitting.
  6. Connect the 2 heater hoses at the heater core.
  7. Using the help of an assistant, install the instrument panel.
  8. Install the 4 instrument panel upper support bolts and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  9. Install the 2 instrument panel end panels.
  10. Install the 2 lower instrument panel support bolts and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  11. Through the instrument panel cluster opening, install the instrument panel cowl top bracket nut and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  12. Install 2 instrument panel center support screws and 3 support bolts.
  13. Connect the antenna inline connector and the 4 instrument panel electrical connectors from the right side.
  14. Connect the left side instrument panel bulkhead connector and install the instrument panel support bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)..
  15. Connect the steering shaft to steering column pinch bolt and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  16. Install the instrument cluster.
  17. Install the 2 lower A-pillar upper and lower trim panels.
  18. Install the 2 door scuff plates.
  19. Install the floor console.
  20. Enable the air bag system.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22. Fill the cooling system.
  23. Recharge the A/C system.
  24. Start the engine and check for leaks.
